Elite Scientists Programme

I spent the academic year 2019-2020 as the ambassador for the Elite Scientists Programme at William Perkins C of E School in Greenford. The initiative began with a talk to 300 students in Year 7, 8 and 9 and was followed by after school sessions working on an extended project looking at the difference in neural recordings from a commercially available EEG device with changing activities. Upon completing this, I worked with the Elite Scientist coordinator Ms Anita Kapila, to set up this initiative across the four schools in the foundation.

Skin, Society, Science - Pint of Science

The following video features two quick fire panel discussions showcasing scientists from the African-Caribbean Research Collective, the West-African Research Collective and Black In Neuro as part of Pint of Science Festival 2020 on 10th September 2020. Decolonised Networking

Decolonised Networking is a non-profit company created by a small group of young South Londoners. Bored of seeing the negative and often racially charged effects of nepotism, they aim to create change in their communities. I am one of their ambassadors. I took part in their launch event which was a multi-industry showcase, snippets of which can be viewed here.

Young, Gifted and STEM (YGASTEM)

YGASTEM is an initiative ran by Ms Genevieve Bent that looks to improve the experiences and engagement of Black and Ethnic Minority young people with STEM subjects. I did an online Twitter takeover with them as well as presented at their launch event on October 24th 2020.

Imperial: Diversifying Research Podcast

Episodes 4 & 5 involved a conversation with myself and host Fola Afolabi about my journey through academia and STEM, what I have learnt and how to navigate this environment. Our conversation then moves to wider barriers that Black students face in making there way through academia and how I try to help. This project (led by the Black Scholarship Collective details below) and accompanying call for contributions led by Black PhD students and supported by Black academics aims to highlight the lived experiences of Black PhD students within the UK academic system, demystify the journey for our community and lobby Higher Education to do better.

The Brainstorms Festival - Readjusting the lens

Spoke at the Brainstorms Festival (online) with Clíona Kelly on behalf of Black In Neuro. The Brainstorms is an initiative based in Austria that looks to bring together key players from business, academia, industry and facilitate innovation in neuroscience. We looked at bias in AI, medical technology and neuroscience. Full details can be found here.

STEM London Panel - “You Can’t Be What You Can’t See”

As part of STEM London’s Black History Month celebrations I was part of a panel looking at highlighting the wealth of careers and opportunities available by pursuing a career in STEM. Moderated by Rhoda Quist, fellow PhD researchers & scientists shared their career journeys.

Reach Society - Careers Conference 2019 & 2021

The Reach Society is a social enterprise that aims to improve the prospects of young people, especially young Black boys and men. I have worked with them as part of their annual Career’s Conference and have also been involved with network conversations.

Black Minority Ethnic Early Careers Researcher Conference 2020

I was selected to speak at the 4th Black Minority Ethnic, Early Career Researcher Conference on the 14th September 2020 (online). I spoke about my journey to academia, aspects of my research and initiatives I had been involved with creating. My talk can be found in the media section and begins at 57:45.

Imperial Windrush Day event - 22nd June 2020

This was an online event held by Imperial As One, looking at the Power of Education. We had an undergraduate, postgraduate and staff panel full of Black academics, talking about their journey and top tips to succeed in their respective fields.
